Moldova is a good country for going outside without making a major expedition out of it.
You don't need mountains, expensive equipment or weeks of planning.
There are forests to walk through, rivers to follow, vineyards and fields stretching across the hills, limestone cliffs above the Dniester and villages connected by small
roads and tracks.
Sometimes the destination is a monastery, a lake or a viewpoint.
Sometimes you simply follow the road because you want to know where it goes
and in Moldova, that can be reason enough.
Hiking & Nature Walks
Moldova isn't a mountain country, but there is plenty to walk through.
The forests of Codrii offer shaded paths and woodland, while the landscapes
around Orheiul Vechi, Țipova and the Dniester bring river valleys, limestone
slopes, villages and considerably more climbing than the word Moldova might have prepared you for. ;-)
You can plan a proper hiking route or simply spend a few hours walking and a pair of good shoes are still a better idea than optimism.
Cycling Through Vineyards & Villages
Cycling gives you a different way to see Moldova.
Small roads connect villages, vineyards, farmland and towns, and the country's rolling landscape provides plenty of routes away from the busiest roads.
But rolling is an important word.
What looks like a gentle hill from the car can develop a completely different personality and exsperience when you meet it on a bicycle. ;-)
Take water, check the route before leaving and remember that road conditions can change considerably once you leave the main roads.
Exploring Cliffs & Cave Monasteries
Along the Dniester and Răut, Moldova becomes considerably more dramatic.
At places such as Țipova, Saharna and Orheiul Vechi, paths lead along limestone
slopes, through valleys and towards monasteries, caves and viewpoints above the rivers.
Here, nature and history are physically beside each other.
You can walk through the landscape and then enter places people have used for
worship, shelter and everyday life for centuries.
Just remember one small detail at Țipova:
After walking down, Moldova has unfortunately still not installed an elevator to bring
you back up. ;-)
Fishing & Lakes
Fishing is a huge part of outdoor life across Moldova.
The Dniester and Prut are the country's great rivers, while the Răut, Lake Manta, reservoirs and smaller lakes provide very different surroundings.
Some people come with proper fishing equipment and know exactly what they are doing.
Others sit beside the water, eat something, talk and occasionally remember that there is a fishing rod nearby.
Both seem to manage perfectly well. ;-)
A Different Kind of Outdoor Experience
Outdoor Moldova doesn't require you to conquer anything.
Walk, cycle, fish or just sit beside a river, take food into the countryside and follow a path through the forest.
Stop when you find a view you like or simply take a road because you haven't been down
it before.
There will be days when you cover twenty kilometres, while there will be days when
you find a good place after two kilometres and decide that further progress is
completely unnecessary.
Both count as exploring Moldova.
Picnics & Relaxation
You don't have to be doing something all the time.
Find a cozy and calm place beside a river, near a forest, overlooking a valley or somewhere along the road and stop for a moment.
Bread, cheese, vegetables, fruit and something to drink don't require very
much preparation.
A blanket helps and so does remembering to take everything with you again when you leave.
Come on!
Moldova is waiting for us! 😄
Ieși afară, alege o direcție - sau pur și simplu lasă Moldova să decidă unde te va duce.
Go outside, choose a direction - or simply let Moldova decide where to take you.
