Roman I of Moldavia was the son of Petru I Mușat of Moldavia and became ruler at the end of the 14th century.
He is known as the leader who expanded and strengthened Moldova’s territory and identity.
Roman I ruled Moldova during a period when the country was no longer just forming - it was growing in strength and confidence. After the organizational work of his father, Petru I, Roman I focused on expanding Moldova’s control and influence.
Under his rule, Moldova reached from the Carpathian Mountains all the way to the Black Sea. This was a major achievement, as it gave the country access to important trade routes and increased its political importance in the region.
Roman I also reinforced the idea of Moldova as a
unified and independent state.
