Amphibians & Reptiles

Common Reptiles

Moldova’s wetlands, forests, and open landscapes are home to a variety of amphibians and reptiles that live quietly between water, land, and sunlight.

These species are closely connected to their surroundings, depending on warmth, clean water, and stable habitats.

Though often unseen, they play an important role in maintaining balance - controlling insects, supporting the ecosystem, and reflecting the health of the environment.

Their presence is subtle, but essential.

Grass Snake (Natrix natrix)
A non-venomous and harmless snake, often found near water.

It is a strong swimmer and feeds mainly on amphibians, playing an important role in the natural balance.

Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis)
Common in sunny, open areas, this lizard is often seen resting on warm ground
or stones.

Its quick movements and earthy colors help it blend into its surroundings.

European Pond Turtle (Emys orbicularis)
Found in calm waters such as ponds and slow rivers, this turtle spends time both in water and basking in the sun.

It is a quiet but important part of aquatic ecosystems.

Common Amphibians

European Green Toad (Bufotes viridis)
A resilient and adaptable species, often found in open landscapes, gardens, and near shallow water.

Its green patterns blend into dry surroundings, allowing it to survive in conditions where other amphibians may struggle.

Common Frog (Rana temporaria)
Widespread across forests and wetlands, especially active in early spring when it gathers near water to breed.

Its presence marks the quiet return of life after winter.

Marsh Frog (Pelophylax ridibundus)
Often seen near rivers and lakes, this large frog is known for its strong calls that carry across the water during warm evenings.

Rare & Protected Reptiles

Dice Snake (Natrix tessellata)
A water-loving, non-venomous snake that depends on clean rivers and wetlands.

It is more sensitive to environmental changes and less commonly seen.

European Green Lizard (Lacerta viridis)
A larger and more vivid species, known for its bright green color.

It prefers warm, undisturbed habitats and is less commonly encountered.

Rare & Protected Amphibians

Fire Salamander (Salamandra salamandra)
A striking black and yellow species found in moist forests.

Sensitive to environmental changes, it reflects the health and purity of its surroundings.

Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus)
A protected species that depends on clean, still waters.

During breeding season, it develops a distinctive crest, making it one of the more unique amphibians in the region.

European Tree Frog (Hyla arborea)
A small, bright green frog that lives among vegetation near water.

More often heard than seen, it brings a soft, living presence to warm evenings.
