Balc Of Moldavia
 1358 - 1359

Balc is often overlooked, but he represents:
- The final link of the first ruling family.
- The transition moment before independence.
- The end of Moldova as a Hungarian-controlled border region.

Balc of Moldavia was the son of Sas of Moldavia and the grandson of Dragoș of Moldavia.

He is remembered as one of the earliest rulers of Moldova, leading the land during a short and uncertain period in the late 1350's.

Balc inherited a territory that was still very new and not yet fully formed as a country.

Moldova at this time functioned as a border region under the influence of the Hungarian Kingdom. Like his father and grandfather, Balc ruled as a local voivode, meaning he had authority in the region but remained connected to Hungarian power.

His time as ruler was brief and marked by instability. The structure created by Dragoș was still fragile, and control over the land was not firmly established.

During Balc’s rule, this fragile balance was broken when a new leader, Bogdan I of Moldavia, entered Moldova with support and challenged the existing authority.

Bogdan I succeeded in taking control and breaking away from Hungarian influence, which ended Balc’s rule and the line of Dragoș’ family in Moldova. This moment marked a major turning point, as Moldova moved from being a controlled frontier region to becoming an independent principality.

Although Balc ruled only for a short time and is not widely known, his place in history is important. He represents the final stage of Moldova’s early formation under external influence - the last ruler before independence changed the course of the country’s future.
