Bogdan I Of Moldavia
 1359 - 1365

Bogdan I is one of the most important figures in Moldova’s history because he:
- Around 1359: Takes control of Moldova.
- Early 1360's: Consolidates independence.
- Around 1365: His rule likely ends.
- Established independence.
- Ended foreign control.
- Created the foundation for a lasting state.

Dragoș founded Moldova, Bogdan I made it truly free.

Bogdan I ruled in the late 14th century and is remembered as the
leader who transformed Moldova from a controlled border region into
an independent state.

Before him, rulers like Dragoș, Sas, and Balc governed Moldova under the influence of the Hungarian Kingdom.

Their role was to maintain order, but they did not have full sovereignty.

Bogdan I changed this. Around 1359, he crossed the Carpathian Mountains into Moldova, challenged the existing leadership, and took control of the land.

In doing so, he rejected Hungarian authority and established
Moldova as a self-governing principality.

This was not just a change of ruler - it was a shift in identity.

Under Bogdan I, Moldova began to develop its own political structure, free from external control.

His actions laid the foundation for future rulers, including some of the most important figures in Moldovan history.

Bogdan I’s reign represents the true beginning of Moldova as a state.

While others before him started the process, he was the one who secured independence and gave the country its own direction.
