Fishing on the Prut River

Prut River near Cahul, Vadul lui Isac, Văleni, Slobozia Mare and Giurgiulești

Leaving Cahul behind and continue the drive towards the Prut River, the landscape changes gradually.

Long roads cross the open farmland, villages appear between fields, and when you passing through Vadul lui Isac, Văleni, Slobozia Mare and Giurgiulești, it is easy to understand why people here often look in the direction of the river.

The villages along the Prut river feels very close connected to the land around them.

Houses stand between gardens, fruit trees, and open fields that stretch far beyond the edge of the village.

Someone works in a garden, another sits outside in the shade, and now and then a tractor drives slowly along the road between the fields.

During summer, the air carries the smell of dry grass, warm earth, and
river water, while the sun stays over the landscape long into the evening.

As you get loser to the river, things start to look different.

Reeds gather along the banks, birds fly low above the water, and the wind becomes more noticeable once the open fields begin giving way to wetlands and softer distances of river landscape.

Around Văleni and Slobozia Mare especially, you begin seeing more signs of the river.

Small roads lead towards the water, fishing boats rest near the shore, and quiet fishing spots appear between reeds, trees, and sheltered parts of the river where local fishermen have been coming for years.

You can expect to catch carp, crucian carp, bream, roach, perch, and pike, especially near reeds and more calm sections of the river during
the warmer months.

You can also find catfish in the deeper water, particularly near slower channels and calm stretches where some local fishermen are staying through the night hoping for a larger catch.

If you are lucky, zander can also show up in the deeper parts of the
river, especially during the early morning hours or closer to sunset when
the light begins to fade across the water.

The Prut River forms much of the natural border between Moldova and Romania and runs for more than 950 kilometres from its source in the Carpathian Mountains to its meeting with the Danube near Giurgiulești.

Fishing along this part of the Prut often feels more calm than many places
along the Dniester.

If you arrive early, you will often find local fishermen already near the water with folding chairs, buckets, simple fishing equipment, and enough patience to stay there for hours.

You can stay close to the villages or continue along the river where quieter stretches of water and less visited banks offer a little more space and solitude.

Many people come here for more than just the fishing.

If you stay until evening, you will see the light slowly settle across the reeds and water while birds continue flying above the wetlands long after the sun have said goodnight.

Around places like Văleni and Slobozia Mare, the river often becomes more calm closer to the end of the day, and before you know of it, you find yourself sitting longer than you originally intended and had planned.

You have the possibilities to camp and are possible in several areas along the river, especially away from homes and farmland, and during the warmer months it is not unusual to see fishermen stay overnight near the water.

Small tents, simple cooking equipment, and campfires often appear along the riverbanks as evening approaches.

Some stay for a night, others for the weekend, and a few stays as long as the fishing is good.

If you decide to stay overnight, remember to respect private property, take any waste with you when leaving, and be careful with open fires during the dry summer months.

Even on more calm fishing days, very few people seem disappointed.

You sit at the riverbank near the river much longer, another cast becomes a few more and in the meantime time just passes..

The light begins change across the reeds and water, and before not so long  evening has arrived without you have noticed it.

When it is finally time to leave, the road runs along the river for a while
longer, giving you one last view of the water before it disappears
behind the landscape.
