Rivers in Moldova

Major Rivers

Moldova’s rivers have shaped the country’s landscapes, history, and daily life for centuries.

Flowing through valleys, forests, and open plains, they provide water, support
agriculture, and create rich ecosystems.

Some rivers define borders, while others quietly cross the country - but all of them play an important role in Moldova’s identity.

Dniester River
The Dniester is Moldova’s most important river, stretching approximately 1,350 km in total length, with a significant part forming Moldova’s eastern border.

Its width varies greatly, from narrower sections to wide, open stretches reaching
over 100 - 200 meters.

It is a vital source of drinking water, supports agriculture and irrigation, and is central to fishing and biodiversity.

The river valley also creates some of Moldova’s most scenic natural landscapes.

Its width varies depending on location, typically ranging
between 50 and 150 meters.

It is a smaller river, typically narrow and calm, supporting agriculture and rural communities.
