Văleni is one of those villages where it is worth leaving the main road and taking a walk through the smaller streets.
Behind the gates are gardens, fruit trees and houses that tell their own stories and it is a place where everyday village life is still very much present.
Located in the Cahul district in southern Moldova, close to the Romanian
border, Văleni has around 1,500 inhabitants.
The village lies near the Prut River and Lake Beleu, within an area known for its wetlands, wildlife and traditional rural communities.
The roads are a mixture of asphalt and dirt roads, with houses standing behind colourful metal gates, wooden fences and old stone walls.
Some homes are carefully renovated, while others show their age.
Chickens wander through yards and gardens provide vegetables and fruit for the families living here.
Agriculture remains a big part of life in the village.
Beyond the houses are fields, orchards and small plots of land cultivated by local families and depending on the season, you may see people working in their
gardens, collecting fruit or preparing their land for the next harvest.
Văleni is also known for its traditions and especially local music, food and hospitality.
Traditional dishes are still prepared in village kitchens, and visitors can experience southern Moldovan customs through local guesthouses and cultural activities.
The village has become known for keeping these traditions alive.
Not far from the village is the Lower Prut Natural Reserve, where Lake Beleu and its surrounding reed beds attract many different species of birds.
Pelicans, herons and egrets are among the birds that can be seen in the area and during the seasons, water levels change, so the landscape does not always
look the same.
There is much more to Văleni than its natural surroundings.
Take time to walk along the village roads, look at the different gates and houses, and enjoy the small details of rural Moldova.
It is often these ordinary things that make a visit memorable.
